I had been looking for a really unique build to feature, until I came across Kyle Scaife's car on Instagram a few months back. It is unlike anything you've seen at your local cars n' coffee and very different from a lot of the builds within the GTA car community. I had the opportunity to ask Kyle a few questions over social media as to how his car came to be...
1. What do you drive?
"My car is a 1967 Mustang Coupe body mounted on a 1999 Corvette drivetrain. It has been chopped, slammed, and widened."
2. What was the goal of this project?
"The goal for the project was to build a fun and fast car for much cheaper than anything else you could buy for the same price."
3. Why a 1967 Mustang?
"There is no real reason why I chose a Mustang other than it was available. If it had been a 1965 Mustang available, I would have gotten that."
4. Can you explain what the build process was like?
"The build took about a year of work. I first picked up the Mustang in September of 2015, and then stored it until January 1st, 2016. I started tearing it apart with my father. A few months went by and the frame and roll cage were built to mount the body to another drivetrain that I had access to at the time. We stored the car for a while as I saved some money to buy my own drivetrain. November 2016, we brought the car back into the shop and started working on it again.
I finally received my donor Corvette that came from California in December and we placed that under the body. Then we could work on everything else that we had to hold off on until the drivetrain showed up (firewall, fenders, interior, etc). We worked every night and every weekend until the car was driveable in mid July of 2017."
5. What was the most difficult aspect of the project?
"The most difficult aspect for myself was the simple fact that I'm a fabricator, not a mechanic. The fabrication side of the build wasn't too difficult really, but I didn't know much about the car side. I had to learn how things like the clutch works and how to run brake lines and fuel lines and even some stuff regarding the engine."
6. How does it drive?
"It drives awesome. It's a little stiff currently, but once I swap out the springs for some softer ones it will be great. It handles like a go kart and is just so much fun to drive."
7. How have others received your car?
"I didn't know what to expect when I started building the car, but I've found now that most people seem to like my car and think it's pretty cool. There will always be the odd guy who thinks I ruined a classic or it's too low or it has the wrong motor in it, as I have an LS. But other than that, it gets pretty positive responses."
8. What modifications still need to be made?
"I have a few modifications that I need to make still. I have a new set of wheels coming for the car that will sit a lot further out from the body of the car, so that means I need to make new fender flares for it. Also, I want to make up a few other things like a front splitter, rear diffuser, and a ducktail spoiler. In the future I'd like to do quite a bit of engine work as well so I can run a set of twin turbos."
9. Any plans on tracking/racing it?
"I'd like to take it to the drag strip just to see what it can do. I'll probably go to a local autocross event at some point as well, but I feel like a proper road course if where my car would perform best."
